Last week, Prince William and Kate Middleton surprised royal watchers by going on a rare outing with their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, in tow. But it wasn't just the public who got an unexpected treat.

The Cambridges attended a special performance of the pantomime Pantoland at the London Palladium, which was staged for essential workers and their families. When the younger audience members arrived at the event, workers dressed as elves asked them what they wanted for Christmas—and then rushed off to famed British toy store Hamleys to fetch and wrap their personalized gifts. When the performance was over, the children emerged to find that their Christmas wishes had been granted.

The Duke and Duchess revealed this element of the event in a clever video. The royal duo took turns reading a reworked version of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" over footage of the elves taking orders and rushing to fill them. "This Christmas we want to say THANK YOU to our key workers and their families for all they have done and for the sacrifices they have made to keep us safe," William and Kate captioned the clip. Watch it in full below.

The Pantoland performance came just after another undertaking that the Duke and Duchess planned as a way to thank essential workers during the holidays: a tour of Great Britain aboard the royal train. The short trip ended with a stop at Windsor Castle, where they briefly reunited (outdoors, and at a safe distance) with family members Queen Elizabeth, Princess Anne, Prince Charles and Camilla, and Prince Edward and Sophie.
