Prince William and Kate Middleton Enjoy an Active Day Out in Scotland

This weekend, Prince William will embark on a solo trip to Singapore for the Earthshot Prize awards as Kate stays at home to support Prince George with his exams. But today the couple headed out together for a jam-packed day in the Scottish Highlands to highlight organizations supporting rural communities.

Straight away, William and Kate reminded everyone of their love of sport and the outdoors as they joined in with a mountain biking session at Burghead Primary School in Moray.

Looking casual in a Burberry jacket and jeans, Kate grinned as she cycled ahead of William across wooden planks. The couple was there to highlight the work of charity Outfit Moray, which has won awards for the outdoor adventure and learning activities it delivers to disadvantaged young people.

Ahead of the visit a spokesman described how the trip was intended to show “support for Scottish rural communities, as well as highlight work being done to support young people and mental health in this part of Scotland.” During their second stop of the day the couple went to a family-run farm to hear about initiatives aiming to support young people’s mental health. At Brodieshill Farm in Moray they met people aged 14-29 who are supported by organisation Lower Speyside Young Farmers, which provides a social environment for those growing up in a sometimes isolated environment.

The final stop of the day was to go-karting track Inverness Kart Raceway, although the couple’s adventurous spirit did not extend to having a go on the go-karts. Instead, they watched and chatted to young people involved in programs run by Highland-based charity DAY1.

The decision to travel to Scotland was announced at the start of this week, although has been much longer in the planning. Since becoming the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate also became known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, titles previously held by Charles and Camilla. Polling shows that the monarchy is less popular in Scotland than the UK as a whole, with a recent YouGov poll finding that 49% of people in Scotland thought that Britain should continue to have a monarchy in comparison to 64% in England and 57% in Wales.
