This afternoon in London, Prince William and Kate Middleton attended a memorial service for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, marking the fifth aniversary of the tragedy that claimed the lives of 72 people. According to Kensington Palace, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also met privately with survivors of the fire and families who lost loved ones.

The royal couple sat in the front row of the multi-faith service, which took place at the foot of Grenfell Tower. Many attendees wore green, as the color has come to represent the tragedy.

Earlier in the day, survivors and families of the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire gathered at Westminster Abbey to pay tribute to the victims in a service organized by Grenfell United, a group of survivors and bereaved families fighting for justice.

"Many think we would have moved on by now," Grenfell United said in a statement. "But it’s hard to recover when so little changes. The reality is, it’s still as painful now as it was then."

In June 2017, in the immediate aftermath of the fire, Prince William joined his grandmother Queen Elizabeth to meet with those affected by the fire, as emergency services continued their search for survivors. On the one year anniversary, Meghan Markle and the Queen observed a poignant moment of silence.

The royal family has previously been involved in relief for victims of Grenfell tower. In September 2018, Meghan Markle's first solo royal project was supporting a charity cookbook called Together, which raised money for the Hubb Community Kitchen, which started as a place where victims of the fire could prepare food for their families. In 2019, Kate and William met with victims of the fire during the launch of the National Emergencies Trust, a charity formed to provide emergency services during disasters in the United Kingdom.
