Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton may have just celebrated their 10 year wedding anniversary, but their romance goes back much further than their 2011 nuptials. The duo first met during their freshmen year of college at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland in 2001, and it seems that the connection was undeniable.

They "definitely had chemistry," Laura Warshauer, who lived in the same dorm as William and Kate, told People for a special edition on the Cambridge's anniversary. "Whenever Kate was in the room, Will was obviously paying attention to her. When we'd be sitting at lunch in the dining hall and the two of them would be talking, it was amazing to see how natural it was, how they had so much to say to each other. Looking back, there were all these small moments—certainly moments where I was like, 'Wow, this could really be something.'"

Clearly they felt so too, though it took some time for their relationship to progress to more than friendship. In their sophomore year, the future Duke and Duchess of Cambridge moved into a four-bedroom apartment with two other friends, but things apparently remained platonic for a while.

"We moved in together as friends," William explained in a 2010 interview about their engagement. "We lived with a couple of others as well, and it just sort of blossomed from there, really. We just saw more of each other, and you know, hung out a bit more and did stuff."

"It did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other," Kate agreed, "but we did become very close friends from quite early."
