Prince William Just Revealed a Very Random Present He Gave Kate Middleton When They Were Dating

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s relationship famously dates all the way back to their college days at the University of St. Andrews, where they first met as students, became friends, and eventually fell in love.

While we (rightfully) don’t know too many details about their courtship days, the Duke of Cambridge did just let the world in on his somewhat questionable gift-giving skills. During an appearance on That Peter Couch Podcast, Prince William revealed the very random gift he once gave his then girlfriend: a pair of binoculars.

“That was early on in the courtship, that was. I wrapped them. They were really nice,” he said, per People. “I was trying to convince myself about it. I was like, ‘But these are really amazing, look how far you can see!’ She was looking at me going, ‘They’re binoculars, what’s going on?’ It didn’t go well. Honestly, I have no idea why I bought her a pair of binoculars.”

Will, Will, Will…we have so many questions. But we’re sure he’s much improved at selecting presents over the years.

Prince William also said on the podcast that home schooling during the pandemic has definitely revealed some weaknesses in his own academic skill set. “My patience is a lot shorter than I thought it was…and that my wife has a lot of patience. I was a bit embarrassed about my maths knowledge—I can’t do Year 2 Maths!” he said

And, of course, they talked a little soccer—sorry, football—as Crouch is a former player. “Since being a dad, football has become way more important to me than it ever used to. It’s really weird,” Prince William said. “I need to go and let off a bit of steam. It’s become a lot more relevant to me and I need it.”

But Prince William is not not trying to force his own favorite team on Prince George. “I’m trying not to persuade him to be a Villa fan–I’m letting him choose his own way. It’s about finding what fits for him,” he said. And like so many dads before him, the future King of England thinks his son (another future King of England) could have a great future on the pitch.

“Definitely, I reckon he could. I reckon he could be their all-time leading goal scorer. I can see no reason why not. It would be brilliant,” he said.
