Prince William isn't allowed to use his own Twitter account
Being a millennial, you'd think Prince William would be all about the social media. And, despite the fact that he and wife Kate Middleton share official 'Duke and Duchess of Cambridge' accounts across Twitter and Instagram, it seems William isn't actually allowed to get his hands on them.
Yup, the Kensington Palace staff do their best to keep his mitts off the login, according to the royal himself. As both football fanatic and President of the FA Cup, Prince William appeared as a special guest on That Peter Crouch Podcast this week, where he discussed his love of the game and the importance of mental health, among other things. And at one point, the conversation came around to social media.
Chris Stark, who co-hosts the podcast alongside footballer Peter Crouch and sports journalist Tom Fordyce, asked the Prince if he controlled his official Twitter account. To which William replied: "No, they deliberately keep me away from that."
Delving into why, the dad-of-three recalled a Champions League semi-final game between Liverpool and Barcelona last season, which he described as "one of the best games of football I have ever seen".
In his excitement, William said he "went mental, I grabbed hold of Twitter and just posted it. It was an amazing match, I was literally blown away by it.
"I got completely out of control, just like tweet that! Get it out!" he remembered. The tweet in question was the first William posted directly from himself on the account, which has 2 million followers. "Well done Liverpool - an incredible result, what a comeback!" he wrote, signing his tweet off with a 'W'.

Since then, Prince William explained that as an avid Aston Villa fan, it's been hard to keep his hands off Twitter to celebrate when they've won. "Nearly every Villa game that we've won, which hasn't been many this season, I've been trying to get hold of it," he said. But the staff aren't having any of it, by the sounds of it. "They keep it away from me now. I have to fight them for it!" he said, laughing.
It's not just sport that the Prince uses social media for, however. Earlier this year, when Prime Minister Boris Johnson was moved to an intensive care unit with coronavirus, the Duke of Cambridge made a rare, personal post.
"Our thoughts are with the Prime Minister and his family, who like so many in the UK and around the world are affected by coronavirus. We wish him a speedy recovery at this difficult time. W," it read.
So perhaps all he has to do is redeem himself with a few more non-football-related tweets, and his social media team might give him back the password. Oh, the woes of being a royal.
