Royal watchers are swooning over a rare clip of Princess Diana and her eldest, Prince William. In the video, a young William can be seen powdering Diana's face while she smiles, indulging him. Check it out below.
The pair were preparing for a 1985 family photoshoot with the press, staged inside their Kensington Palace home. The images taken that day—particularly the shot of Diana, William, and Prince Harry by the piano (above)—would become some of the best-remembered photos from the princes' childhoods.
This period in royal history has reemerged and become culturally salient once again, thanks largely to the recently-released fourth season of The Crown, which takes place in the '80s and devotes significant screen time to Diana's troubled relationship with Prince Charles. There's also been renewed interest in Diana's 1995 televised interview with Panorama, after a report in the Sunday Times claimed that journalist Martin Bashir used falsified bank statements to convince Diana to participate.
Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, subsequently called on the BBC to open an enquiry into the matter, telling People, "[The BBC] have yet to apologize for what truly matters here: the incredibly serious falsification of bank statements suggesting that Diana’s closest confidants were spying on her for her enemies." (Per Charles, Bashir first showed him the fake bank statements, which convinced him that two courtiers were being paid to leak to the press about Diana; this prompted Charles to introduce his sister to Bashir.)
The BBC has since launched an independent investigation, which Prince William praised as "a step in the right direction." Prince Harry hasn't spoken publicly on the matter, but a source close to the royal has said that a statement isn't necessary "to imagine how [Harry] is feeling privately."
