Apple TV+ is setting its sights on a TV adaptation of the 1991 film The Prince of Tides, based on the 1986 bestselling novel by Pat Conroy of the same name.

The story, roughly, follows a man, Tom Wingo, who falls in love his troubled sister’s psychiatrist, Susan Lowenstein. The book begins when Tom learns that his twin sister, Savannah, has attempted suicide again, and he agrees to leave his home in South Carolina for Savannah's in New York to look after her.

The film, starring Nick Nolte and Barbra Streisand as Tom and Susan, respectively, and directed by Streisand, was nominated for seven Oscars, though it failed to take home a trophy.

After the film, Conroy gifted Streisand a copy of the novel, which he wrote: "To Barbra Streisand: The Queen of Tides...you are many things, Barbra, but you're also a great teacher...one of the greatest to come into my life. I honor the great teachers and they live in my work and they dance invisibly in the margins of my prose. You've honored me by taking care of it with such great seriousness and love. Great thanks, and I'll never forget that you gave The Prince of Tides back to me as a gift."

The TV show will reportedly be an adaptation of the film. Tate Taylor, who wrote The Help, is writing the script. According to the Hollywood Reporter, "Sources say offers are already being made to A-list talent ahead of a potential production start this summer. Sources note scripts are still being finalized."
