Just a few days before Christmas, Prince Philip has been admitted to the hospital. After being driven to London, the Queen's 98-year-old husband walked himself into King Edward VII Hospital today for treatment related to a pre-existing condition.

Buckingham Palace issued a statement about the Duke of Edinburgh's health this morning, just as the Queen was photographed arriving in Norfolk by train for her weeks-long holiday in Sandringham.

"The Duke of Edinburgh travelled from Norfolk this morning to the King Edward VII Hospital in London for observation and treatment in relation to a pre-existing condition," reads the statement. "The admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’ Doctor."

Prince Philip is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days, so at this point, it's unclear if he will attend church services with the royal family on Christmas Day. As is tradition, the Queen's relatives walk together to St Mary Magdalene church to celebrate the holiday.

Should the duke have to skip the annual stroll, he won't be the only famous face missing from the royal crowd. The Sussexes are notably spending their first holiday season as a family of three with Meghan's mother Doria.

"The Duke and Duchess are looking forward to extended family time towards the end of this month," a spokesperson for the couple said last month. "Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, their Royal Highnesses will spend the holidays this year, as a new family, with the Duchess' mother Doria Ragland."

The statement continued: "This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the royal family, and has the support of Her Majesty the Queen."
