Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has died at 99, with Buckingham Palace announcing that he passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle. Following his time in the Royal Navy, Prince Philip married the future Queen Elizabeth in 1947, making him the longest-serving consort in the history of the British monarchy. Britain's Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, remembered Prince Philip as one of the last surviving people to have fought in World War II, saying, "From that conflict he took an ethic of service that he applied throughout the unprecedented changes of the post-War era. Like the expert carriage driver that he was, he helped to steer the Royal Family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life."

In his seven decades of service to the Crown, Prince Philip accompanied the Queen around the globe on public engagements, jokingly referring to himself as "the world's most experienced plaque unveiler." For her part, Queen Elizabeth II described her husband as her "constant strength and guide." As "the first gentleman in the land," Philip sought to shepherd the monarchy into the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, but became known for ill-considered remarks, often of a clueless, insensitive, or even racist nature. During his lifetime, he was associated with 800 different philanthropies; he also founded the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme, a youth development program that supports children in over 130 nations. He retired from public life in August 2017, but appeared occasionally at private family events. The Prince is survived by his four children, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
