Prince Philip Asked Cate Blanchett the Weirdest Question During a Buckingham Lunch, but She Kept Her Cool
He may be the palace staff’s fave royal, but Prince Philip wasn’t trying to please anyone one day during a lunch at Buckingham Palace.
Cate Blanchett, speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show that aired Saturday, revealed that she had once been invited to dine at Buckingham (although jury’s still out on when exactly this lunch took place). “There were 12 of us, and I couldn’t work out for the life of me why I’d been invited,” Blanchett said. The Oscar-winning actress once portrayed the monarch Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 movie Elizabeth. “Playing Queen Elizabeth and sitting next to her (Queen Elizabeth II), I thought, ‘Maybe she’s seen the movie and wants to ask me about my interpretation,'" Blanchett said.
Prince Philip, 97, was sitting next to Blanchett at lunch. “I sat next to [Philip] and he said, ‘I hear you’re an actor? I was given a DVD player for Christmas and I can’t work out whether I put the green cord in or the red cord,’” the actress recalled. “I thought, ‘He’s invited me to lunch to tell me about his DVD player!’”
On the same Jonathan Ross episode, British actors Paul Whitehouse and Ray Winstone recounted a time when Philip drove by their movie set and rolled down his window to ask what they were up to. “‘We’re making a film, sir. Yes, with Tom Courtenay and Sir Michael Caine, would you like to meet them?’” Ray Winstone said. The Duke of Edinburgh's response: “No,” and drove off.
