Prince Louis Wears Prince William's Trooping the Colour Outfit from 1985
Prince Louis joined his siblings in their Trooping the Colour carriage debut at the 2022 parade in celebration of Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee. Notably, the 4-year-old was wearing a sailor outfit that his dad, Prince William, wore 37 years ago.
William wore the suit at age 2 in 1985 when he appeared on the balcony for that year's Trooping the Colour celebrations.
At age 4, Prince Louis wore his dad's same mini sailor suit at the 2022 Trooping, coordinating in blue with his siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, and his mom, Kate Middleton.
Royal children wearing sailor suits dates is a long tradition that can date back to Queen Victoria's son, King Edward VII.
"Bertie put on his sailor's dress, which was beautifully made by the man on board who makes for our sailors. When he appeared, the officers and sailors who were all assembled on deck to see him, cheered, and seemed delighted," Victoria wrote in her diary.
Prince Edward (later King Edward VIII, who would abdicate the throne to marry Wallis Simpson) and Louis's great-great-grandfather Prince George also wore sailor suits.
While this was his first appearance in the Trooping the Colour carriages, Louis made his Trooping the Colour Buckingham Palace balcony debut in 2019. The three siblings seemed to enjoy themselves as they drove past the crowds, with Louis and Charlotte enthusiastically waving to the gathered spectators.
Trooping the Colour was Prince Louis's first official appearance of 2022, though Kensington Palace released photos of the youngest prince for his fourth birthday. He last appeared with his family during a surprise red carpet appearance in December 2020—he was likely deemed too young to join his older siblings at Easter Sunday services and the memorial service for Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey.
