Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Oprah interview has quickly become one of the most candid conversations ever about the cost of being royal. Harry himself, when asked if he would've stepped back from his role if he hadn't met Meghan, answered no...because he was trapped, and his father and brother remain so.

"The answer to your question is no, [I wouldn't have left,]," Harry told Oprah. "I wouldn't have been able to because I myself was trapped. I didn't see a way out. I was trapped, but I didn't know I was trapped. But the moment that I met Meg, and our worlds collided in the most amazing of ways and then [I began] to see how trapped within the system, like, the rest of my family are. My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don't get to leave, and I have huge compassion for that."

Oprah asked Harry what he thought his late mother Princess Diana would think of all that has transpired. "I think she would feel very angry with how this has panned out and very sad, but ultimately all she'd ever want is for us to be happy," he said.

Harry also revealed that his family has cut him off financially. "My family literally cut me off financially, and I had to afford security for us," he said. "In the first quarter of 2020, but I've got all my mom left me and without that, we wouldn't have been able to do that. So touching back on you asking what my mom would think of this, I think she saw it coming and I certainly felt her presence throughout that whole process. I'm just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side because I can't begin to imagine what it must've been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago. Because it's been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we have each other..."

Harry added that he and the Queen remain close. "I've spoken more to my grandmother in the last year than I have [in] many, many years. My grandmother and I have a really good relationship and understanding, and I have deep respect for her."

Harry opened up before about how the royal family was unwilling to give him and Meghan help. Watching Meghan, who struggled with suicidal thoughts while working as a royal and being abused by the press there, impacted him deeply. "I went to a very dark place as well," he said. "I wanted to be there for her. That’s just not a conversation that would be had. I guess I was ashamed of admitting it to them. I don’t know whether they’ve had the same feelings or thoughts. I had no idea. It’s a very trapping environment that a lot of them have been stuck in. I didn’t have anyone to turn to. You know we’ve got some very close friends that have been with us through this process, but for the family, they all had this mentality of 'this is just how it is. You can’t change it. We’ve all been through it.'"
