Let’s just say that Prince Harry’s relationship with his stepmother, Queen Camilla, is, er, complicated.

In an excerpt from his memoir Spare, the Duke of Sussex, 39, shared how the queen turned his bedroom into a dressing room when he moved out of Clarence House at the age of 28. The 39-year-old royal wrote about how he returned to Clarence House with Meghan Markle (who was his girlfriend at the time) to introduce her to his dad, King Charles.

Though the spare pretended “not to care” about the room change, it did affect him in some ways. “After I moved out, Camilla turned my bedroom into her dressing room,” Prince Harry said. “I tried not to care. But, especially the first time I saw it, I cared.”

It’s safe to say that Prince Harry and Queen Camilla have often had a rocky relationship. FYI, Harry's dad King Charles and Queen Camilla got married in 2005, which was eight years after his mom Princess Diana’s death.

Back in 2005, Prince Harry (according to Newsweek) spoke positively of his stepmother. At the time, the duke told the press he loved Camilla “to bits.” And he slammed any rumors of her being a “wicked stepmother.”

“Everyone has to understand that it’s very hard for her. Look at the position she’s coming into. Don't always feel sorry for me and William, feel sorry for her,” he continued. “It’s all different. We are very grateful for her. She’s made our father very happy.”

However, Prince Harry expressed a different sentiment toward the queen during a 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper in January 2023. During the one-on-one interview, the royal referred to her as “the villain.”

The Duke of Sussex added, “She was the third person in their marriage. She needed to rehabilitate her image.”
