At the beginning of August, news broke that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had gone to Africa to celebrate her 36th birthday and their one year anniversary. The Sun ran a cover of them arriving:

And now Us Weekly has alleged details about what may have happened when they landed in Botswana. Two sources tell the outlet that Prince Harry "intended to ask Markle for her hand in marriage" during the three-week trip. But since the journey began, the prince apparently refused to confirm, even to friends, whether he went through with it. (Either that or they are faithfully keeping a secret.) One source noted to Us that Harry wanted to propose near the anniversary of his mother Princess Diana's death "so he can associate August with something joyful."

Another said Markle and Prince Harry aren't likely to confirm the news for a bit either way: "Harry said he would want to enjoy the news between the two of them before word starts spreading out."

The African engagement story may not just be vespers and rumors. A source Us describes as a "royal insider" told the outlet that Prince Harry had been planning this trip and proposal for months. He reportedly worked closely with a jeweler and had a ring made with "diamonds taken from a brooch he inherited from Diana."

One confirmed event on the trip includes a "small, surprise celebration" at Prince Harry's friend's house where Markle met all of the prince's pals in the country. "He was thrilled to bits that he could introduce her to them," a "friend of Harry" told the outlet. "The celebration began almost the minute they touched down. Meghan was speechless and so touched."
