Prince Harry Recalls Prince Charles’s “Lovely Gesture” of Walking Meghan Markle Down the Aisle

Prince Harry is forever grateful to his father for a number of reasons, but not least of all for the last-minute role he played in his and Meghan Markle’s May 19 nuptials.

In a new BBC documentary celebrating Prince Charles’ life on the eve of his 70th birthday, Harry, 34, recalls how he asked Charles for a huge favor prior to the big day—walking Markle down the aisle—and how Charles didn’t hesitate a moment before agreeing to the task.

“I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course. I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you,’” Harry said. “For him, that’s a fantastic opportunity to step up and be that support, and you know, he’s our father so of course he’s going to be there for us.”

Even though familial duty made Charles’ agreement a near-guarantee, however, Harry didn’t take the favor lightly, and in footage from the royal wedding, the prince can be seen whispering a thank you to his father.

Markle’s father fell ill prior to the wedding and ultimately didn’t attend the nuptials due to heart issues.

“I’ve been brought up well,” Harry adds on the documentary. “You’ve gotta say thank you. Just because he’s my father that doesn’t mean I can just sort of go, ‘Okay, that’s all, I’ll take it from here.’ I was very grateful for him to be able to do that.”

In the documentary, Camilla, Charles’ wife, also recalls the moment fondly, noting how seriously Charles took his role throughout the day, and how grateful Harry was for it.

“I think that was very touching,” she said of Harry mouthing a thank you to his father. “Sitting where I was, you couldn’t hear what he said. But afterwards, watching it on television, I think it was a very … it was a lovely gesture.”
