Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's New Baby's Name is a Tribute to Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana

Earlier today, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced the happy news that their new baby, a daughter, had arrived. According to a release from the Sussexes, the baby was born on Friday morning at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California. Along with the news of the birth, the royal couple also shared the name of their much-anticipated second child, and it turns out to have a very special family connection. The Sussexes have named their first daughter Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, paying homage to not one, but two of her iconic female relatives.

"Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales," the couple explained in the birth announcement. They also added, "The Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family."

While Harry and Meghan chose to take a step back from life as working royals last year, maintaining a connection to Harry's family has clearly remained important to them, especially to Harry's late mother Princess Diana. From the very beginning of their marriage, the Sussexes have paid tribute to Diana, who tragically died in 1997, including homages to her in their wedding, and even in Meghan's engagement ring. On numerous occasions in recent months, the Sussexes have likewise invoked the late Princess of Wales, telling Oprah in their primetime interview earlier this year that they "felt her presence throughout this whole process," and that, "ultimately, all she'd ever want is for us to be happy." Prince Harry later revealed that one of their son Archie's first words was "grandma" in reference to Diana.
