Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Formally Dissolve SussexRoyal, Their Former UK Charity

From Town & Country

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have begun the process of formally shuttering their former foundation, SussexRoyal. According to People, the couple filed the necessary paperwork to dissolve the charity in the UK.

After Harry and Meghan announced last summer that they would split off from the charity they once shared with Prince William and Kate Middleton (the aptly-named Royal Foundation), the couple announced their plans to launch their own charity, SussexRoyal. But this changed after Harry and Meghan revealed their intention to step back as working royals early this year, as they agreed to not use "royal" as a part of their branding going forward.

They've since revealed that their new initiative will be called Archewell—after the Greek "Arche," which also inspired baby Archie's name—but they haven't yet explained their plans for the charity in detail, or laid out a timeline for its launch.

SussexRoyal's formal shutdown was to be expected, but still marks another step on Harry and Meghan's path toward their new lives. The only ongoing project under SussexRoyal's purview was Travalyst, Harry's sustainable travel initiative. Travalyst is now an independent UK non-profit, and all of SussexRoyal's assets will be transferred over to it, per People.

A source told the publication that Travalyst hopes to help the tourism industry recover from the pandemic. "The Travalyst partnership is committed to playing an active role in helping communities that rely on tourism rebuild and recover in ways that support their long-term sustainability and resilience," the source said.

Meanwhile, all of SussexRoyal's trustees will step down as the foundation is formally dissolved, save for Harry, who will stay on until the shutdown is finished. "The Duke and Duchess remain incredibly grateful for the support and guidance the trustees have given during this period," a source added.
