As Prince Harry turns 36, he is spending the day quietly with Meghan and Archie. But in addition to the low-key celebrations, he also marked his birthday in a very special way as he and Meghan made a personal donation of $130,000 to the African girls education charity CAMFED.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose to match the public’s donations of $129,000, which were raised as part of a fundraising campaign in honor of their birthdays that closed this evening. Alongside the donation, the Sussexes posted a message on the CAMFED fundraising page saying: “No better way to celebrate what really matters. Thank you to everyone who donated, Harry and Meghan.”

CAMFED works across Africa to provide marginalized girls and young women access to education. By 2019 they had helped more than 4.1 million children to go to school across Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. When the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust—of which the Queen is patron, Harry is president and Meghan vice-president—was first established, CAMFED was one of the first recipients of an award.

In a post on its website last month, the organization describes how they have benefitted from the fundraising campaign in honor of Harry and Meghan’s birthdays. “Since its Twitter launch on July 25th, the #InspiredByMeghan fundraiser for CAMFED higher education scholarships, initiated by the ‘Sussex Squad,’ has been the focus of an extraordinary wave of action and generosity from a global network of supporters of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle,” the website reads. “By the end of The Duchess of Sussex’s birthday on August 4th, this movement had raised an astonishing $69,700. Just six days later, with the #InspiredByHarry hashtag now trending in the lead-up to Prince Harry’s birthday, donations have topped $87,300 — enough to support 37 young women through a whole year of vocational training.”

On International Women’s Day last year Meghan appeared on a panel alongside Angie Murimirwa, the Executive Director of CAMFED Africa, who is also an alumni of CAMFED. During their tour of Africa last year, The Duke and Duchess joined a CAMFED event in Lilongwe, Malawi, with Harry present in person and Meghan joining as the surprise guest via video.
