Prince Harry Delivers an Emotional Speech About Meghan Markle in London

On Tuesday night in London, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended the annual WellChild Awards, which celebrates the accomplishments of seriously ill children in the United Kingdom. During a speech to the audience, Prince Harry broke down in tears when speaking about his wife, Meghan Markle.

Last year the couple came to the awards with a secret: Markle was pregnant with their first child. No one else knew at the time—“but we did,” said Harry.

He then became visibly emotional and put his head down. After taking a pause to collect himself, and with the supportive applause of the audience, he continued.

“I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tightly during the awards, both of us thinking what it would be like to be parents one day, and more so what it would be like to do everything we could to protect and help our child should they be born with immediate challenges or become unwell over time,” Harry said. “And now, as parents, being here and speaking to all of you pulls at my heartstrings in a way I could have never understood until I had a child of my own.”

Their son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, is now five months old. During the event, the couple revealed some details about their son—including the fact that he has inherited his father’s signature red hair. According to an attendee, Harry said that “you can see it in his eyebrows.”

Markle also shared that Archie recently started his first playgroup. “It was a lot of fun,” she said. “He loved it.”

The public will learn even more about Baby Archie on Sunday, when the documentary about the family’s recent royal tour of southern Africa, Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, airs in the United Kingdom. A teaser trailer showed the parents doting on their baby, including one scene in which Markle adorably plants a kiss on Archie’s forehead.
