Penguin Random House (PRH) announced today that Prince Harry’s hugely anticipated memoir, titled Spare, will be simultaneously released around the world on January 10, 2023. “For Harry, this is his story at last,” the publisher said.

According to PRH, the long-awaited volume will open with Princess Diana’s funeral procession, where Prince Harry and his brother—two young boys, two princes—walked behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow. Prince Harry will reportedly disclose what he and Prince William were thinking and feeling at the time, and among other events and themes will explore “the eternal power of love over grief.”

Prince Harry offered no comments in the press announcement, but PRH CEO Markus Dohle had this to say about the publication:

“Penguin Random House is honored to be publishing Prince Harry’s candid and emotionally powerful story for readers everywhere. He shares a remarkably moving personal journey from trauma to healing, one that speaks to the power of love and will inspire and encourage millions of people around the world.”

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, will support British charities with his proceeds from the book, which will be released in 16 languages around the world and promises, with its searing up-close cover image and enigmatic title, to take readers throughout the journey that led him to break with the royal family and settle with his wife, Meghan Markle, in the United States.

In March 2021, Oprah sat down with Prince Harry and Meghan for a two-hour interview that made international headlines for its extraordinary openness about loss, family, and the constrictions of his life as a royal. Later, Oprah and Prince Harry went on to partner on a series devoted to mental health that aired on Apple+, called The Me You Can’t See.

Spare was acquired in the U.S. by Random House president Gina Centrello and is being edited by RH VP Ben Greenberg.
