People devoted its cover story this week to exploring the rift it reports occurred between Prince Harry and Prince William over the last couple years as their lives move in different directions (William is in direct succession for the throne and is preparing to someday be king; Harry is not, being behind all of William's children for the throne). Apparently, Harry's fast-moving relationship with Meghan Markle did cause some strain in the brothers' relationship with each other.

Multiple sources told People that when Harry told his family he wanted to marry Meghan after less than a year of dating her, tensions considerably deepened between him and William. His older brother, an insider said, "cautioned Harry that things were moving too quickly, leaving Harry angry and hurt." A friend of William and Harry objected to the idea that Kate Middleton and William were unfriendly to Meghan herself though, as some tabloids have previously alleged, telling the outlet that that "doesn't sound like them."

A close family friend additionally told the outlet that Harry and William really don't spend that much time together outside for formal engagements. They have different friends, and "they are at very different situations in their lives,” the source said.

Harry and Meghan are married now and about to welcome their first child. William served as Harry's best man in the wedding last May. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent the first months of their marriage sharing a staff with William and Kate in Kensington Palace. They are now separating and getting their own royal household (the technical term for royal staff and office) based in Buckingham Palace.
