From Town & Country

Prince George's godfather, Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster, is doing his part to support those affected by the novel coronavirus pandemic. Grosvenor, who is one of the richest people in Britain, just donated £10 million to national COVID-19 relief efforts.

This gift comes after he donated £2.5 million in March. This money will help fund a number of initiatives in the UK including medical research linked to COVID-19, assistance for NHS workers and their families, and charities which are providing food to families in need, as well as support for those who will experience the long-term economic effects of the pandemic.

“On behalf of my family and everyone at the Grosvenor Estate, I want to say a huge thank you to all our amazing NHS staff and everyone providing critical frontline services. We are all humbled and incredibly grateful that you are working tirelessly to keep us safe and keep the country functioning,” the Duke said in a statement today.

He also outlined several of the initiatives that will be funded by his donation:

“NHS staff and key workers don’t work in isolation. They have children and families whose health and wellbeing will also be highly impacted by this crisis. As they keep us safe, I want to help provide as much support to them and their families as we can. Our donation will help create a Family Fund within NHS Charities Together to provide food, respite, rehabilitation and positive mental health support to NHS staff and their families.

While the impact of this crisis is being felt immediately, the virus will sadly also affect people’s lives long into the future. That’s why I’m keen to support the longer-term scientific and socio-economic response to the epidemic. Through these donations, my Foundation will work with a range of fantastic charities and organisations who are able to help vulnerable people in the difficult months ahead.”

The UK, which remains on lockdown, has been hit particularly hard by the virus. As of this morning, 98,476 have tested positive, 12,868 of which have sadly died.

Grosvenor is one of the youngest billionaires in the world, having inherited his family's fortune when his father, Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor, died suddenly of a heart attack in 2016. At the end of 2019, the Sunday Times put his family's worth around £10.1 billion or roughly $12,750,000, the bulk of which comes from the hundreds of acres of property they own in London.

The Grosvenor family has been quite close with the royals for some time, and the Duke serves as one of Prince George's seven godparents, a group which includes: Oliver Baker, a friend of Will and Kate's from college; Kate's friend Emilia Jardine-Paterson; Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Will and Kate's former private secretary; Princess Diana's close friend Julia Samuel; Prince William's cousin Zara Tindall; Prince William's longtime friend William van Cutsem; and Grosvenor.

In addition to his connection with George, the Duke was spotted attending Prince Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle in May of 2018, and he is also Prince Charles's godson.
