Today marks Prince George's eighth birthday. In honor of the big day, his parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, released a new photo of the heir to the British throne. The image, captured by the Duchess in Norfolk, features the young prince showing off a toothy grin. However, the photo also includes a special tribute to George's great-grandfather that even some eagle-eyed royal watchers may have missed.

In the image, Prince George sits on the hood of a navy blue Land Rover Defender. This off-road vehicle was beloved by George's late great-grandfather Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth's longtime husband and royal consort who died in April. Prince Philip drove Land Rovers his whole life and the company received the Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Warrant 40 years ago. The late Duke loved the car so much that he even customized a Land Rover Defender to be the hearse at his funeral. He began designing this special hearse 18 years prior to his death, alongside Land Rover engineers. The vehicle was constructed at Land Rover’s factory in Solihull, northwest of London.

Though Prince Philip is no longer around, Prince George is receiving sweet birthday messages from many members of the royal family. George's grandfather, Prince Charles, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall reposted the new photograph on social media.

"A very Happy Birthday to Prince George!" the pair wrote, including a balloon emoji.

The Royal Family Twitter account, which represents Queen Elizabeth and other royals, also shared the photo and a birthday message for the young prince. "Wishing Prince George a very happy 8th birthday today!" read the tweet, with birthday cake and balloon emojis.
