Prince Charles has tested positive for coronavirus. A spokesperson for Clarence House, the London residence of Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, made the announcement this morning. He is being treated near Balmoral, in Scotland; he and Camilla are currently staying in their residence nearby at Birkhall.

“The Prince of Wales has tested positive for Coronavirus. He has been displaying mild symptoms but otherwise remains in good health and has been working from home throughout the last few days as usual. The Duchess of Cornwall has also been tested but does not have the virus. In accordance with Government and medical advice, the Prince and the Duchess are now self-isolating at home in Scotland. The tests were carried out by the NHS in Aberdeenshire where they met the criteria required for testing.

“It is not possible to ascertain from whom the Prince caught the virus owing to the high number of engagements he carried out in his public role during recent weeks.”

As the statement indicates, Prince Charles was still undertaking royal engagements in mid-March. He was making an effort not to shake hands, but the now-ubiquitous social distancing rules were not followed. On March 17 it was announced that the Queen and her family would scale back large gatherings. The Queen herself left London and met Prince Philip at Windsor Castle on March 19; they will wait out the pandemic there.

Britain has been hit hard by the COVD-19 outbreak. As of publication, there are over 8,000 cases and 422 deaths. After an initial reluctance to follow strict orders, Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday issued a stay at home order that confines every citizen to their home.
