Prince Charles’ Nickname for Daughter-in-Law Meghan Markle is Incredibly Sweet
Pull out the periodic table. It’s no surprise that Prince Charles is fond of his new daughter-in-law, Meghan Markle, whom he adorably walked down the aisle at the royal wedding last month. However, a new report further corroborates the Duke of Wales’ affection for the former Suits star as he’s given her an unusual-but-sentimental nickname: Tungsten.
Palace sources told the Daily Mail this week that Prince Charles bestowed the monicker on his daughter-in-law due to her “tough and unbending” character. While “Tungsten” may sound off-putting to some, it’s a rather affectionate name that has stuck. “Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a tungsten-type figure in his life as he can be a bit of a softy,” the source told the British outlet. “It’s become a term of endearment.”
Tungsten is classified as a rare metal that has the highest melting point out of any of the other periodic elements. (Other strong and unbending metals include platinum and titanium.)
The world saw Prince Harry softly whisper “Thanks, Pa” when Markle reached the end of the aisle at St. George’s Chapel with Charles. Interestingly enough, Markle’s biological father, Thomas Markle, spoke out to Good Day Britain this week in his first interview since he backed out of his wedding role just days before the nuptials were scheduled to take place in May. Still, Thomas praised Prince Charles for replacing him.
“He looked very handsome and my daughter looked beautiful with him,” the bride’s father said. “I was jealous I wish I’d been there I wish it had been me but thank God he was there and thank him for that. It might have been a treat for him as he never had a daughter.”
The relationship between Prince Charles and his two sons hasn’t always been so warm, but the narrative has supposedly slowly evolved with the addition of Markle to the family. Just last month, Harry gave a speech honoring his father at the Duke of Wales’ birthday celebration, and the four have been seen warmly interacting especially at the Royal Ascot this week.
Within the wedding itself, Harry and Meghan asked Prince Charles for his opinion on musical selections, which resulted in a ceremony highlight: the addition of the Kingdom Choir, which performed a beautiful gospel-style rendition of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.”
Meghan also reportedly thanked her new father-in-law while giving a toast at her intimate evening reception at Frogmore House.
