Prime Day Deals for Skiers

We’re a long way out from any of the significant ski holidays. Opening day isn’t even a glint on the horizon, the last few resorts who have held out this far are close to closing, skiing is about to enter its summer hibernation. So take the batteries out of your beacon, make sure you’ve got storage wax on your skis. Clean out your pockets of any snacks or beer cans from closing weekend, and settle into summer. But while you do, remember, that for the folks at Amazon, their biggest day of the year is here.

Prime Day is an annual Amazon tradition, a chance for the retail giant to offer even more absurd deals to its Prime members. While Amazon isn’t really the place to go for new hardgoods, like skis or boots, it’s a nice supplement to your local ski shop for accessories and electronics that make a lot of sense for skiers.

So we’ve dug through all of the deals Amazon is offering for Prime day, in search of items that are going on sale for Prime Day, that make sense for skiers. Remember, these deals are only valid for July 11th and 12th, and you do need to be a Prime Member to take advantage of them.

GoPro Hero 10 Bundle

GoPro’s Hero 10 is the second newest camera in the brand’s lineup, and it’s one of the best choices for capturing POV and action videos and photos while skiing. There’s a reason that GoPro is the “kleenex” of action cameras, the name by which every camera is called, even if it’s made by another brand. GoPro basically invented the category.

This bundle comes with the excellent Hero 10 camera, and a case. The pole mount is great for selfie style video, while we’ve found that it’s easy to use the clip mount to attach to a backpack strap and get great POV style video without having to use a bulky harness. And, best of all, this bundle comes with two batteries, a must for using the GoPro in the cold. Make sure to keep the spare warm and charged in a jacket pocket. All you’ll need to get out there and start making video memories is a micro SD card

Multitool with Swappable Bits

We’re big advocates of always carrying a multitool while skiing. It’s nice to be able to adjust your bindings, fix a stuck zipper, or just cut up your charcuterie anywhere on the mountain. But, ski bindings use a variety of fasteners, so it’s important to have all the right bits. It usually makes the most sense to get a multitool like this one that has swappable bits, and then build a collection of your most commonly used sizes. The bits it comes with are a great start, but we’d recommend adding a #3 Pozi bit.

That’s the most commonly used bit for the screws that attach your bindings to your skis, so it’s always a great idea to have a Pozi handy. With this multitool in your pocket, you’ll be ready to help fix most equipment emergencies on the hill.

Battery Bank

Cold weather skiing wrecks havoc on phone batteries. It’s not uncommon to fully deplete a phone’s battery without even really using it. And usually that’s not a big deal, but it really sucks when you go to capture a video of your friend skiing a new run, and your phone’s battery is dead. Or worse, if you end up in an emergency situation, you want your phone to be fully charged and ready, not dead and unable to assist.

We highly recommend that all skiers carry a small portable battery bank, along with the correct cord for their phone. It’s just extra insurance, it makes it easy to keep your phone topped off, and it’s no real extra hassle.

Apple iPad

Ok, we get it, this one looks like a stretch, but hear me out. I started using an iPad for work six years ago. And then, one evening, my touring partners and I were sitting around the coffee table planning our next ski day, when I realized that I could pull up a mapping program on my iPad and use that to plan out our tour. It’s way easier for multiple people to view at once than your phone, and makes for a really nice compliment to paper maps. I prefer to trace out our route in Gaia, export the .gpx file to Google Earth, and then look at it in 3D to get an idea of the terrain, before loading it onto everyone’s phones.

The iPad makes visualizing terrain and route choices very easy. Is it essential? No, of course not. But I find myself using it to plan most backcountry days, and a Prime Day deal is a great excuse to get one for yourself.

Garmin Venu 2 GPS Smartwatch

Remember how we talked about skiing with your phone being terrible for the battery? A few years ago I realized that the gps tracking feature on most mapping apps absolutely destroys my battery life in the backcountry. But, when I started tracking with a GPS smartwatch instead, my phone stayed charged much longer. It also made it easy to see how far I’d traveled, and how much elevation I’d gained at a glance. Now, I have a hard time imagining backcountry skiing without some form of smartwatch.

The Garmin Venu 2 has all the features you need to keep track of your stats and record your skiing, without putting even more strain on your phone. And this Prime Day deal is as good as you’re going to find for a watch with this feature set.
