This Primary Makeup Shade is Stealing Hearts at New York Fashion Week
From a quick scan of the New York collections, the reign of BB creams and skin-toned shadows has officially come to an end. And while jewel-toned lips and throwback hair accessories made a bid for runway dominance, it was one surprising pop of primary pigment that finally took the lead: A bolt of blue eye color—expertly etched or smudged on with abandon—set fashionable hearts aflutter.
The hue kicked off at Saks Potts’s National Arts Club tea party—where makeup artist Zenia Jaeger dragged a cyan crayon along lashlines—and continued onto Jeremy Scott’s raver runway: To match the sci-fi-inspired ensembles, makeup artist Kabuki gave models like Teddy Quinlivan and Slick Woods a three-dimensional spin with triangular teal tips made of plastic.
Having made similarly standout appearances everywhere from Adam Selman to Area, the color showed up again today at Boss thanks to a dusty-blue cream that was finger-pressed onto lids. “The easy thing to do was nothing, but I wanted to do something,” said makeup wunderkind Thomas de Kluyver of the twist he gave to the “minimalist” directive he received from designer Jason Wu.
Pale enough that it required one to lean in for a closer inspection, the shade offered up a fresh new way to experiment with color for low-key girls who normally count lip balm and a swirl of blush as their only beauty signatures. In other words, the no-makeup makeup of the moment officially has a brand-new look.
