"Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists" Showrunner I. Marlene King on the Possibility of More Spinoffs

"I’m always open to new ideas and new tentacles to explore."

It wasn’t long after Pretty Little Liars came to an end in 2017 that fans started hoping for a spinoff, reunion, or even a feature-length film — dream big, right? Fortunately for fans, PLL: The Perfectionists is finally here, as the hotly awaited spinoff recently made its Freeform debut.

But given how vast the PLL universe seems to be (ahem, remember Ravenswood?), it begs the question: will there be more spinoffs in the future? According to showrunner I. Marlene King, that’s a definite possibility.

In an interview with The Wrap, Marlene explained that “there’s absolutely a world” where more spinoffs are possible. “There were all these meetings about ‘should it be Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists or PLL The Perfectionists? Then someone explained to me that if we want more to come, it should have a colon … It’s so much fun to play in this world, so I’m always open to new ideas and new tentacles to explore.”

While The Perfectionists brings in Alison DiLaurentis and Mona Vanderwaal from the original series, Marlene already has some ideas as to who she’d like to feature in her “dream” PLL show. “Hanna and Caleb as detectives is the one idea that comes to mind,” she told The Wrap, speaking of the on-screen couple played by Ashley Benson and Tyler Blackburn. “I would have so much fun with that show.” A spinoff revolving entirely around Haleb? OK, Marlene, you have my full attention, support, and whatever else you need to make this happen!

Luckily, we might not have to wait for another series in order to see some of our OG faves. “There’s quite a few people who’ve expressed interest in coming on,” Marlene said of the original cast, hinting that we might see a few familiar faces in seasons to come. “For the first season, I felt it was really important to launch the show on its own and let it stand on its own two feet, so it’s not really about those appearances,” the producer explained to The Wrap. “But I think next season we’ll be a lot more open to having some of those OGs and those fun moments.”

Of course, The Perfectionists already has a lot of the same themes that PLL fans originally fell in love with. As Marlene previously explained to Teen Vogue, “We've really tried to create a new world that has all the elements that Pretty Little Liars had in terms of mystery, romance, great friendship, unconditional love...and lots of twists and turns.” She can definitely say that again.
