6 DIY Botanical Projects to Create for a Taste of the Tropics

This painted tote looks like an upscale boutique find, but it's surprisingly simple to make.

  1. Print the tropical leaf template (click on the link below) for a DIY botanica print to fit your tote.

  2. Trace the design onto stencil paper and cut out.

  3. Spray a piece of plastic foam board with repositionable adhesive and place inside the tote.

  4. Pull fabric taut around the board and tape in place.

  5. Spray the stencil with adhesive, then position on top of the tote.

  6. Place tote inside a large plastic bag, and seal the bag around the edges of the stencil with painters tape.

  7. Spray-paint the stencil. Let dry.

  8. Remove tape, bag, and stencil.

  9. If desired, re-position the stencil slightly askew on the painted leaf. T

Clay Herb Ornament

These herb-pressed clay ornaments are super easy to make.

  1. Roll out polymer clay on parchment paper until it's 1/8 inch thick.

  2. Place fresh herbs, leaves, or flowers on the clay, then gently roll over with a rolling pin.

  3. Remove plants.

  4. Cut out ornament shapes with a cookie cutter, then place on a baking sheet.

  5. Use a straw to punch small holes at the top of each ornament.

  6. Bake according to clay manufacturer's directions.

  7. Let cool, then roll the edges of each ornament in a thin line of paint.

  8. Let dry.

  9. Tie a ribbon through each hole.

Give a standard plastic chair a chic modern makeover. Start with a clean, dust-free chair, then attach your favorite botanical paper with three to five coats of hard-coat decoupage medium and a damp sponge. Smooth out the paper around the chair as you go. Let dry.
