While Presidents’ Day has long been established as a huge sales event for home goods like mattresses and appliances, it’s become more of a four-day weekend to save on lots of things—including your favorite cycling gear, apparel, and tech.
With spring just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to refresh your closet or update any bike tools that need replacing. In case you haven’t started searching for sales just yet, retailers including Amazon, Backcountry, and REI are already discounting some products. If you’re looking for watches, pumps, tires, shoes, or maybe a new bike, there are amazing buys to be had.
To sort through it all and help you track down the best bargains before they’re gone, we consulted our Bicycling test team for their recommendations. Our editors are tuned in to what’s new and know what’s worth buying now, so read on for their selections. Their top picks include everything from saddles to knee pads to handlebar tape, and much more.
Items in this roundup may go on and off sale as Presidents’ Day approaches, but we are updating frequently to keep you apprised of current deals. Enjoy the long weekend and happy shopping!
Dan Chabanov’s Picks
The Expert: I’m the Test Editor for Bicycling. I got my start in cycling as a New York City bike messenger but have been racing road and cyclocross since 2007, competing in professional cyclocross races from 2009 to 2019, and winning a Master’s National Championship title in 2018.
Competition Latex Road Tube
Latex tubes are a tangible performance upgrade. They improve a tire's rolling resistance, help with comfort, and in some cases, are considered to be more puncture resistant than regular butyl tubes. Compared to butyl tubes, they are much lighter. Because the weight they eliminate is rotational, it can be more easily felt by the rider.
Grand Prix 5000 S TR Tire
Continental's GP 5000 S TR is my default choice for a road bike tire. It's grippy and fast, but it's also not one of those race tires that will go flat when you look at it sideways.
Service Course Bar Tape
If you don't remember the last time you installed handlebar tape then you could probably use a fresh roll. It's a simple and affordable way to get your bike looking and feeling like new. Zipp's excellent Service Course bar tape is my long time standard against all the others—it's grippy, stretchy, easy to wrap, and durable.
Tara Seplavy’s Picks
The Expert: I’m the Deputy Editor of Bicycling’s test team. I have nearly 30 years of experience as a bicycle mechanic, product developer, and bike and gear tester. I’ve worked on bikes in one of NYC’s premier pro shops as well as in my own garage, so I know the importance of keeping your bike in top shape.
Corsa N.ext 6G2.0 TLR
Corsas are a Bicycling test team favorite for a fast rolling and predictable cornering road tire. The Corsa N.exts are the slightly heavier and more durable version of the Corsa Pro tires raced to the overall wins in all three men’s Grand Tour races in 2024.
Trainer Accessory Kit
If you’re using your trainer on a bare floor with a thick book holding up your front wheel, this is for you. The 4mm thick mat, which damps vibration and sound, also prevents sweat and spilled energy drink from damaging your hardwood or carpet. A front wheel block is included to level out your seat.
Core Women’s Lightweight Jersey
Rapha’s Core line is a benchmark for cycling clothing for performance and price. The Core Lightweight Jersey, which has a clean aesthetic, full-length zipper, and three generously sized rear pockets, is perfect for gravel, road, or even XC mountain bike use.
Argo Vento Saddle
When I find a saddle I like, I use it on almost every bike I test. For almost three years, my favorite saddle has been the Fizik Argo Vento. This short-nosed road and gravel saddle is available in 140mm or 150mm widths and R1 (carbon rail), R3 (kium rail), and R5 (steel rail) platforms.
Gabe Ortiz’s Picks
The Expert: I am Bicycling’s Maintenance and Repair Editor, with a decade of industry experience in product design and a Master’s of Science in Textile Design.
Race Shakedry Jacket
When the weather changes, my go-to for rain protection is Gore-Tex's cycling division GOREWEAR. This thin laminated jacket is small and light enough to throw in your back pocket. Deployable when the heavens open and the deluge begins, you won’t regret picking up a staple jacket that will last you a lifetime.
Impero Ultimate Frame Pump
With various size options, this pump will save your arm on the side of the road as you try to fix your flat. Fitting neatly underneath your top tube, Silca's pumps (and accessories) are known for craftsmanship and attention to detail. Many riders—including those on our staff—equip this very pump on their bike.
V2 Tubeless Valve Kit
Make the switch to tubeless but definitely do it with some personality. Muc-Off makes valves in all sorts of fun colors to match your bike personality. Available in 44mm and 60mm, these valves will handle a range of rim sizes.
Matt Phillips’s Picks
The Expert: I am Bicycling’s Senior Test Editor, and I’ve been a leading cycling tech journalist since 1995, likely using more cycling equipment and riding more bikes than pretty much anyone on the planet.
Generation e1.2 Electric Bike
If you’re cargo-bike curious, this deal is the one that might turn you into a cargo bike owner: Named one of our best cargo bikes, the well-equipped e1.2 hauls up to 300 pounds on its stock front and rear racks.
Joint VPD 2.0 Knee Pads
It doesn’t matter if you’re a new cyclist or the most experienced and skilled rider in the world—everyone hits the deck. Protect your knees from knocks and scrapes (and worse) with POC’s excellent Joint VPD 2.0 VPD pads. Comfortable enough to pedal in all day, the non-Newtonian VPD material is soft and flexy most of the time but stiffens on impact to provide protection.
Sparrow Water Bottle Cage
If you’re looking to add a bit of style to your bike so it stands out, put a bird on it. PDW’s Sparrow Cage is competitively light at about 50 grams and offers good bottle security as well.
Men's Chase Bike Hydration Vest
We’re long-time fans of Camelbak’s Chase Bike Vest. Comfortable, secure, and practical, it sits high enough on the back so you can still reach into your jersey’s pockets, while the front pockets are convenient ways to carry nutrition and your phone. This bike vest is great for any kind of riding and an especially popular accessory for gravel riding and racing.
