President of Square Enix Says Company Plans To Be "Aggressive in Applying AI"

Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu has big dreams for the future of the Japanese video game company. Each year, Kiryu publishes a letter on New Year’s Day, updating fans on his evolving vision for Square Enix.

This year, AI was front and center in the president’s writing. Kiryu opened the letter by addressing the topic of geopolitical uncertainty in the world, as well as how society has been emerging from the pandemic.

He then outlined how the experiential value of VR and AR technology has increased with the latest advancements, as content becomes more immersive and realistic.

Kiryu went on to discuss the capabilities of AI. First off, he noted the “academic debate” surrounding generative AI programs, such as ChatGPT. Still, he recognized the merits of AI to the gaming industry, writing that he beliebes “that generative AI has the potential not only to reshape what we create, but also to fundamentally change the processes by which we create, including programming.”

Later on in the letter, writing how Square Enix will be operating in 2024, Kiryu shared how he plans to use AI to develop and publish video games.

“We also intend to be aggressive in applying AI and other cutting-edge technologies to both our content development and our publishing functions,” he wrote. “In the short term, our goal will be to enhance our development productivity and achieve greater sophistication in our marketing efforts.”

And as part of the company’s long-term goals, Square Enix plans to “leverage” AI to create new content for consumers.

“We believe that technological innovation represents business opportunities,” Kiryu wrote.
