President Joe Biden shared a statement on the passing of Dianne Feinstein, remembering her as a "true trailblazer" and "cherished friend."

Biden celebrated Feinstein's lengthy career, noting that while serving in the Senate together for over 15 years, he "had a front row seat to what Dianne was able to accomplish."

He added, "It's why I recruited her to serve on the Judiciary Committee when I was Chairman — I knew what she was made for, and I wanted her on tour team."

The president also shared Feinstein's most admirable traits: "There's no better example of her skillful legislating and sheer force of will than when she turned passion into purpose, and led the fight to ban assault weapons."

He continued, "Dianne made her mark on everything from national security to the environment to protecting civil liberties. She's made history in so many ways, and our country will benefit from her legacy for generations."

Feinstein's office confirmed her passing to NBC this morning, Sept. 29. The senator, who made history as the longest-serving woman in the Senate, died at 90 years old. Last February, she announced her plans to retire at the end of 2024.

"Senator Feinstein never backed away from a fight for what was just and right. At the same time, she was always willing to work with anyone, even those she disagreed with, if it meant bettering the lives of Californians or the betterment of our nation," her chief of staff James Sauls said in a statement shared with NBC.
