President Joe Biden Called Ethel Kennedy on Her 95th Birthday

Today, Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert F. Kennedy and sister-in-law of John F. Kennedy, celebrates her 95th birthday, and she marked the occasion with some very special birthday wishes. Per an Instagram post by Ethel's daughter Kerry Kennedy, the Kennedy family matriarch received a call earlier today from President Joe Biden to convey his well-wishes on her big day.

"@Potus just called to wish Grandma Ethel happy birthday. He was 35,000 feet above the earth with @JoeKennedyiii," she wrote in the caption, noting her nephew Joe Kennedy III's position as U.S. Special Envoy to Northern Ireland. "@POTUS said he had two heroes sitting right by his desk, Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King."

She added, "He said that he loved the Kennedy family, they’ve all done such great things. He said He went into politics because of Robert Kennedy, Uncle Ted was a great help when his family died in the car crash, and Jack Kennedy was the first Irish president going to Ireland and now he’s the second, and he hopes he can fill Jack’s shoes." And Ethel's response? "Mum replied, “We love you Joe and Joe”!"

Part of the long and storied Kennedy political dynasty, Ethel has been a significant figure in the world of the Democratic party for decades. On the heels of her husband RFK's tragic assassination by Sirhan Sirhan in 1968, Ethel founded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization and continued to work for social justice causes while raising her eleven children. She and President Biden have known each other for years; she even presented Biden with an RFP Ripple of Hope award in 2016.
