Joseph R. Biden Jr. walked down the steps to become the 46th president of the United States on a sunny yet snowy morning at the U.S. Capitol Building today, with his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, by his side. Standing tall, Biden wore a coat with an American flag pinned to the lapel, fitted navy blue suit, white dress shirt, and periwinkle-blue tie by Ralph Lauren. He accessorized the ensemble with black oxford shoes and a blue face mask. His look was sharp, elegant, and befitting of his title as the 46th commander in chief. It also communicated a return to civility in politics and celebrated the American Dream.

The Bronx-born Lauren started his career in the 1960s after serving in the U.S. Army for two years. He initially sold ties, and over the decades, grew his brand to encompass apparel, accessories, childrenswear, sportswear, home furnishings, and more. The Ralph Lauren Corporation is now a billion-dollar empire and one of the largest in the global fashion industry. The label also has the distinction of dressing politicians across the political aisles, from President George W. Bush and First Lady Melania Trump to President Barack Obama and First Lady Hillary Clinton.

President Biden is a statesman through and through, running a campaign that promoted unity in a fractured country. His choice of Ralph Lauren enforces this message. Ralph Lauren calls it “a symbolic sartorial statement for a return to decorum and upholding the values of America."

Throughout his presidential run, Biden wore a number pieces from the label, from iconic polo shirts to a number of top coats. This suit on Inauguration Day, however, is the one that is truly historic.
