Preschool accidentally serves children Pine-Sol instead of apple juice

A pre-school in Hawaii mistakenly served children Pine-Sol instead of apple juice.

Three girls — one 4-year-old and two 5-year-olds — were served the household cleaner at the Kilohana United Methodist Church Preschool in Honolulu on Tuesday.

“Only sips were taken before the lead teacher realized the liquid was not apple juice,” the preschool said in a letter to parents, Hawaii News Now reported. “The staff responded immediately by calling EMS and police. The children’s parents were immediately notified as well.”

The children were evaluated by paramedics, but none of them required further treatment, the Honolulu Emergency Services Department told local Honolulu news station KHON.

The preschool director said the Pine-Sol was mistaken for apple juice by a classroom assistant “because it was the same color,” according to the health department inspection report.

However, the report noted the Pine-Sol was in its original container and properly labeled. It also said the cleaning cart has no food items on it, and cleaning supplies are stored on it.

All food items in the kitchen are also properly stored and labeled in kitchen cabinets, the report stated.

The classroom assistant no longer works at the school, KHON reported.

Some parents were in disbelief after they were notified of what had happened.

“I think it’s extremely terrifying. It’s very, very scary, but it’s hard for me or any of the people that I’ve spoken to understand how it happened in the first place,” said Turina Lovelin, who has a child who attends the school.

The preschool said it will be evaluating its process for obtaining snacks and refreshments to prevent any chance of this happening again. Staff will also undergo additional training.
