Should Pregnant Women Get the Flu Shot?

The Doctors discuss the case of a pregnant woman who claims she was fired from her job for not getting the flu shot and whether getting the shot is something expecting women should get.

OB/GYN Dr. Nita Landry says, "Due to the changes in the immune system, heart, and lungs during pregnancy, pregnant women are at an increased risk for serious illnesses and even mortality due to the flu."

She notes that The Centers for Disease Control and The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists continue to recommend that pregnant women should get a flu shot during pregnancy regardless of the trimester of the pregnancy. Dr. Nita adds that the flu antibodies from the vaccine not only protect the mom but also cross over to the baby.

To combat the flu, The Doctors recommend getting the flu shot, limiting contact and interactions with people who are sick, wearing a mask when around other sick people, getting rest, staying hydrated and if you are sick - stay home and remove yourself from others.
