Intro

If you’re like me, coffee is an important part of your morning ritual. And I find this to be particularly true in the winter when it’s cold and dark out and I’m getting ready for a big day of skiing.

This past winter, I had the opportunity to try Hikers Brew coffee for the first time and I’m totally sold. I tried a six-pack sampler of the 1.5 oz. Venture Pouches to start out. It was a great way to start my morning and I actually really liked the different flavor options. The individual packet sizes are great for when you’re rushing out the door and were perfect for car camping when I didn’t want to bring a whole bag of coffee but needed something to get me going in the morning. The small pouches work especially well because you don’t need to measure anything. I just poured a pouch into my French Press and voila!

Performance

I’m not usually one for flavored coffee but thought the flavors of the Hikers Brew were excellent. They didn’t taste overly artificial or fake. I particularly liked the Hazelnut and Vanilla. The regular, unflavored option was great as well and tasted like high quality coffee.

The 1.5 oz. Venture Packs make your life really easy. Wake up. Open pack. Pour into vessel. Add Water. Go ski. At least that’s how my mornings tended to look like. I didn’t use Venture Packs daily because I didn’t want to waste them, but found myself turning to them when I was car camping and traveling this past winter. It was way easier to just bring the right number of packs for travel days than to bring a whole bag of coffee, worry about spilling it, or find that I didn’t have enough or had way too much left at the end of the trip. These are also a great option for hut trips in the winter because they’re so lightweight and fuss-free.

If you like the coffee and want to just use it at home, too, you can grab one of their Basecamp Bags.

My preferred brewing method was to use a french press but the Hikers Brew pre-ground coffee can really be made in whatever way you prefer. Aeropress? Heck yes. Pour over? Yep. Drip coffee maker? Duh.

Sustainability-Oriented

Not only does Hikers Brew coffee taste good, the brand is also committed to promoting sustainability. According to them: “Our mission is to promote sustainability within the outdoor and food packaging industries. To support this mission, we offer a small multi-use and compostable package that keeps coffee fresh.”

As someone who likes to be environmentally-conscious in how I live my life, it’s nice to find a brand I can align with in terms of values. Knowing that my coffee is coming in compostable packaging makes it a little easier to justify my coffee addiction.

Why you should give it a try

Hikers Brew coffee is a great option for backcountry travel. The small, single-use packets of coffee will simplify packing for your next backcountry hut trip or car camping mission. You can also buy the bigger bags if this becomes your morning brew of choice.

As I scheme next winter’s backcountry adventures, I certainly will be turning to Hikers Brew to fuel some big days in the mountains and ensure that I can have easy access to caffeine while traveling.
