Powder Patrol: Jay Peak Confirms Opening Day

Jay Peak, the Vermont resort popular for its glades, ungroomed, and in-bound ski terrain, just announced its impending opening.

The resort posted a relaxing POV clip from the back of a snowmobile cruising under a lift with the caption "only a few more days until we’re open for Daily Operations, this Friday, December 1st."

East Coasters are frothing on this one.

Jay Peak boasts "the most snow in eastern North America and a liberal in-bounds policy that ensures you can enjoy it. 81 trails, slopes, and glades all wait for you" at the Vermont resort.

In-bounds skiing is like training wheels for backcountry. The trails are not groomed or set out in front of you, but the snow is still fresh to pave your own tracks. Unlike outbound skiing, however, the snow is managed by ski patrol, mitigating some risk.

In fact, in-bound skiing is a lot safer than proper backcountry. Outside laid down the statistic that the odds are 1 in 50 million that you’ll be buried in an in-bounds avalanche.

There are over 100 acres of gladed terrain at Jay Peak, so the odds of hitting a tree or getting buried in a tree well are higher.

But why think about the dangers? The rewards are right there, and Vermont just got hit with a snowstorm. The terrain will be open, and now, you can go ski it without having to hike or skin up the mountain.

So, who's excited for December 1st? And are you bringing your beacon?
