Powder Magazine Founders Jake And Dave Moe To Be Inducted Into US Ski Hall Of Fame

The US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame is gaining two valuable members of the Powder Magazine family.

It was just announced that Powder founders Jake Moe, and his brother Dave Moe (AKA Captain Powder), will be inducted into the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2023.

The announcement was made on September 19th, 2023 at the Hall's free to attend class announcement at Black Rocks Mountain Resort in Park City, Utah.

Today's announcement isn't the actual inauguration, (it's scheduled for later this spring), but the news is exciting all the same.

We reached out to Jake Moe to tap into his excitement.

If you're familiar with Jake, you might recall that he speaks with a certain level of enthusiasm and excitement when it comes to skiing. His answers to the following questions are a testament to that beloved trait.

POWDER: What does being inducted into the US Ski Hall of Fame mean to you?

JAKE: "This is a flat out miracle. We started out with absolutely NOTHING…just my brother Dave, my wife Susy, an IDEA to change the ski magazine landscape and absolutely NO MONEY…"

POWDER: Would you like to thank anybody in your personal and/or professional life for helping along the way?

JAKE: "I really have to give thanks for Salomon Bindings (before they had anything else) for purchasing the FIRST ad in the FIRST Issue!"

POWDER: How do you plan to celebrate?

JAKE: "Personally, Susy and I will take a long long mountain bike ride, pinching ourselves along the way…(still) trying to figure out if this is actually real!!"

POWDER: Are there any additional comments or statements you'd like to make?

JAKE: "My approach to all Team Members, Contributors, Vendors has always been…if you aren’t having fun….you are FIRED! And, I actually fired folks that didn’t ‘buy into’ that philosophy and were not having fun putting out the best magazine in the world!"

Powder Magazine, with all of its history and cultural significance, simply wouldn't exist without the visions of Jake and Dave Moe.

In celebrating Jake and Dave's legacies, we thought it was fitting to take a look back at the very first issue of Powder Magazine published in 1972/1973 to see where their vision began to take shape.

To begin, let's all take a second to recognize their brilliance in creating the first cover of the magazine. Does it get any more iconic than the photo below?

The first issue is loaded with fantastic stories of the early days of powder skiing.

It feels like a time capsule of sorts, and it's cultural relevance is palpable even if the authors didn't know it at the time. Click here to check out the first article in its entirety.

One passage stood out as we were perusing through the pages. The following is an editor's note penned by Jake Moe, Dave Moe, and Bruce Bailey.

In hindsight, it's a mission statement for what Powder became thanks to people like Jake and Dave Moe:

POWDER LINE

In this, our first issue of POWDER, we begin a celebration of powder skiing which is in our view, the finest variety of skiing there is. To us powder means freedom, with an emphasis, not on how you do it, just doing it more. It is finding yourself singing when the chill factor reaches minus 25 and you feel at home standing up, falling down, on any edge. You don't just trust your skis you usually forget they are there at all. It is beyond equipment, form, all the do's and don'ts of ski instruction. Perhaps most important powder skiing means getting away from the crowd to a place where there are no lines, no lift towers, no snow fences, no bodies in the way. Just snow. It's another world. Well, we could go on and on. "POWDER" our way of looking at a sport we love. It's critical, it's funny, it's affectionate and we think it's honest. This first issue has been one of those "little help from our friends projects" born of a hundred starts and a thousand plans which somehow finally fit together. We don't know how but we're thankful. "POWDER" is an expression of thanks. We hope you enjoy it.

We'll have more coverage on Jake and Dave Moe's induction into the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in the future.

Until then... Powder to Jake Moe. Powder to Dave Moe. Powder to the People!

Oh, and since we're on the topic of magazines... I'm happy to confirm that Powder is coming back to print! More to come.
