Potter Park Zoo launches naming contest for river otter triplets

LANSING — Potter Park Zoo's three new North American river otter pups need names, and anyone is welcome to help with that task in exchange for a small donation.

There are three sets of names to choose from: Marlin, Irwin and Jane (for conservation figures Marlin Perkins, Steve Irwin and Jane Goodall); Stanley, Carson and Ivy (taken from children's book character names Flat Stanley, The Cooper Kids and Ivy); and Copper, Petosky (think "Petey") and Isabella (inspired by Michigan place names).

Every $5 donation counts as a vote toward the name set of your choice. You can vote and donate here.

The voting deadline is 10 p.m. Sunday.

The pups were born Feb. 2 to mom, Nkeke, and dad, Miles.

Nkeke has had four litters, including two sets of triplets. She and Miles have had 10 pups together as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan. The new triplets will be on exhibit this summer.

It's been a busy year for the zoo, which early this month announced the arrival of Canada lynx brothers Ragnar and Rollo. The brothers are 4 years old and came to Lansing from the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium.
