Positive Aging workshops address health risks, screenings, healthy cooking, volunteering,

The Falls Prevention Program of Holmes, Wayne & Ashland, Standing Against Falls Coalition and Danbury Senior Living-Millersburg are sponsoring a Positive Aging Workshop series each Thursday in May, beginning May 9, to celebrate Older Americans Month.

The 60 and over population is encouraged to attend. Caregivers, adult children and anyone interested in learning what healthy, positive aging looks like is encouraged to participate.

In each workshop attendees will be provided with life tools to continue to guide individuals intohealthy and safe aging. The workshops are free and will be held 1-3 p.m. in the community room at Danbury Senior Living, 4245 Glen Drive, Millersburg.

Each workshop consists of two one-hour sessions. Each session has topics pertaining to positive aging and healthy living. Pre-register for workshops by contacting Kerry MacQueen at the Health District, 330-674-5035, Ext. 251.

Workshop topics are:

May 9

  • 1- 2 p.m.: Keeping Holmes County Safe. Participants will be introduced to the emergency management program being used in Holmes County and the importance of emergency planning within households.Speakers will be Jason Troyer, director of Holmes County Emergency Agency, and Jordan Tschiegg, EMAspecialist.

  • 2-3 p.m.: Healthy Aging in Holmes County. Participants will learn about the Healthy Aging Grant that will provide more services and programs to help the 60-plus population. Speakers will be Rebecca Starner, LSW, MSW, director of Personal Health Services, Holmes County General Health District.

May 16

  • 1-2 p.m.: Fall risk screenings and lower body strength. Participants will learn the importance of fall risk screenings and lower body strength. Speaker will be Tyler Hawkins, physical therapist, Pomerene Rehabilitation.

  • 2-3 p.m.: Move it! Shake it! Lift it! Participants will be introduced to various forms of exercise that can help promote healthy aging. Speaker is Cheryl Seabright, Certified Fitness Instructor, Cheryl’s L.I.F.E. Fitness Studio.

May 23

  • 1-2 p.m.: Health Risk: Prevention of high blood pressure and stroke. Participants will learn how to prevent and control high blood pressure and stroke. Speakers will be Dr. Janet Dailey, Pomerene Hospital, and Renee Conkle, RN-BC, Cardiac Stress Lab/Rehab PCS.

  • 2-3 p.m.: Heart Healthy Cooking. Participants will be introduced to heart healthy recipes through a cooking demonstration. Speaker will be Kate Shumaker, MS, RD, LD, Extension educator, Family and Consumer Sciences of the OSU Extension- Holmes County.

May 30

  • 1-2 p.m.: Vitality Through Volunteering. Participants will learn of volunteer possibilities through the RSVP and Cooperation for Ohio Appalachian Development programs. Speaker will be Laura Leprotti, RSVP coordinator, Cooperation for Ohio Appalachian Development.

  • 2-3 p.m.: Lending a Helping Hand. Participants will be introduced to four volunteer opportunities that are available in Holmes County. Speakers will be Holmes County Assistant Dog Warden, Mike DeWitt; Friends of the Library, Carole Norman and Paula Cicconetti; Pomerene Hospital volunteer, Cindy Yoder; and Fall Prevention Ambassador Kerry MacQueen, Holmes County General Health District.

Each session will have a question-and-answer period. Brochures and resources will be available pertaining to the topics presented. Refreshments will be provided by Danbury Senior Living.
