Portland Firefighters Race to Rescue Dog Who'd Been Swallowed Up by Sinkhole

These firefighters are true heroes to this pup and their family.

In Portland, Oregon, one family is thanking their lucky stars --and some local firefighters--for the successful rescue of their dog. The Portlanders first alerted authorities when a sinkhole swallowed up the family dog, who had been in their backyard.

As explained in a Facebook post from Portland Fire and Rescue, the crew used similar techniques to rescue the dog as they would to rescue a person. This only goes to show how much everyone--even first responders--cares for our furry companions.

Using the pup's harness, as well as some additional safety and rescue equipment, first responders were able to lift the dog out of the 10-foot-deep sinkhole.

The Facebook post reports, "crews combined equipment from the high-angle rope rescue kit and the trench rescue gear, blended that with some savvy dog skills, and rescued the pup." These firefighters made it sound so easy! One look at the photos will show you just what a complicated endeavor it really was--especially at night!

"All I can stay is thank you for [saving] that dog," wrote commenter Jerry Whitaker. "You guys are the best [...] thank you so much Portland Fire Department." We couldn't have said it better ourselves! This rescue meant the world to the dog and their family, but it's even. more meaningful to see so much support from the public, too.

We wonder if this pup knows that they're famous.!They're probably just grateful to be reunited with family--let's be honest--but the story is quickly going viral. Everyone is safe and sound, though, and that's what's most important.
