The Nintendo Switch likely isn't the first console you think of when you think of racing games, but even with its compact form factor and relatively basic graphics processor, there are still a slew of fun racing games you can play on the go with Nintendo's portable, form-flipping console. We've spent a considerable amount of time playing every game we've included in this list (and plenty of others that weren't) and comprehensively run through nearly every car, track, and feature each of the games have to offer.

In the end, we were left with a selection of games worth sharing with you to ensure you're getting the best experience possible based on what you're looking to get out of a game. Our picks range from playful arcade-style racing games to more simulation-based ones and will truly test your abilities as a digital driver. Buckle up and browse through our selection to see what Nintendo Switch racing game is the best fit for your needs.

Things to Consider When Buying a Nintendo Racing Game

If you're in need of a Nintendo Switch to play on, you have three options: the original Nintendo Switch, the Switch Lite, and the Switch OLED. The original Switch and Switch OLED both have removable Joy-Con controllers and can be docked to be played on a larger display, while the Switch Lite is an all-in-one portable console that can't be docked.

Digital or Physical: All Nintendo Switch consoles work with either digital downloads or physical cartridges (carts). Both come with their own benefits and downfalls. The advantage of digital downloads is that you don't have to worry about carrying around (and potentially losing) a physical game cartridge. The disadvantage is that it's not exactly easy to resell digital downloads once you're done with the games, although it is possible to transfer them from one Switch device to another.

The advantage of carts is that they usually cost less than a digital download, particularly in the second-hand market (Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace), and can easily be used by multiple individuals, which might be nice for families with more than one console. However, there's also the downside in that the cart can go missing or get damaged, rendering the game effectively useless.

Take all of these considerations into account when deciding whether to go digital or physical for your games (some titles, such as Asphalt 9 and GRID Autosport, are limited to digital downloads and aren't available as physical games).

Gameplay Mechanics: Not all racing games for the Nintendo Switch are created equal. Some focus on realistic simulation (GRID), while others lean toward arcade-style fun (Mario Kart 8). Decide what type of racing experience you're looking for and pick a game that falls within those parameters.

Multiplayer Options: If you're keen on racing against friends or other players online, make sure the racing game you're selecting supports multiplayer modes. Some games support only single-player modes, while others may support local and/or online multiplayer.

Controllers: While the Joy-Cons that come with your Nintendo Switch will get the job done, some racing games are better experienced with controllers that have more nuance in the analog sticks and shoulder buttons. We'd recommend the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller if you don't mind shelling out a bit more for a quality wireless controller, but there's also the much more affordable PowerA Nintendo Switch Wired Controller that should perform nearly identically. Hori makes a steering wheel for the Nintendo Switch if you want a more sim-style experience, but it's going to feel much cheaper than the steering wheels designed for console sim racing.

Download Size: The Switch has limited storage. Consider the game's file size if you're downloading directly from the Nintendo eShop and not purchasing a physical cartridge. An external microSD card might be a worthy investment, as you can add a near-infinite number of games to your Nintendo Switch if you have enough microSD storage.

Additional Costs: Some games might have downloadable content (DLC) or in-game purchases that add additional vehicles, tracks, or other content. Factor these additional costs into your decision if you plan to make the most of all the available content.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the latest iteration of Nintendo's iconic arcade-style kart-racing game. The charm of Mario Kart lies in its ability to provide a competitive racing environment with the usual array of Nintendo characters, all while maintaining a whimsical and light-hearted atmosphere players of all ages can enjoy. We played through both the single-player career mode (where you unlock various characters, karts, and kart parts), as well as the multiplayer, and both provided the signature experience we've become accustomed to across decades of Mario Kart iterations.

Although the game is anchored more toward an arcade-style experience rather than a strict racing simulation, it doesn't skimp on delivering a fun racing adventure in both single-player and multiplayer modes. Each of the tracks has its own unique twists, turns, and visually stunning sceneries (hello, Rainbow Road!), along with the strategic deployment of mischievous in-game power-ups—all of which contributes to a fun racing experience that's sure to keep adults and kids alike playing race after race.

GRID Autosport

Whereas Mario Kart is for the more playful gamer, GRID Autosport caters to the more serious crowd. The game, developed by Feral Interactive, offers a collection of racing disciplines, from open-wheel series to touring cars. The controls are responsive and the graphics impressive, delivering a more realistic racing ambiance on the Nintendo Switch without alienating casual players.

The variety in racing disciplines, coupled with a robust car handling model, provides a satisfying racing experience that bridges the gap between realism and accessibility. Having spent much time playing this on the Nintendo Switch, we suggest buying a Nintendo Pro Controller (or third-party alternative), as the small analog sticks and shoulder buttons on the Switch itself make it difficult to have nuanced input, particularly in terms of acceleration and braking.

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered

The hallmark of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered (NFS:HP) is its exhilarating police-versus-racer chases, delivering a rush of adrenaline across its entire map. NFS:HP leans more toward the arcade side of the racing spectrum, emphasizing high-speed chases and action-packed gameplay.

Car selection is limited, but the models that are available are rendered beautifully and live up to their real-life counterparts while outrunning police on the array of tracks. The remastered version brings enhanced graphics and generally smoother performance for the Nintendo Switch, but we did notice there were occasional framerate drops during gameplay, particularly in graphic-intensive scenes, such as crashing scenes.

Burnout Paradise Remastered

The allure of Burnout Paradise Remastered lies in its open-world exploration or Paradise City and the unbridled joy of destructive arcade racing. Burnout made its mark in the racing game world with spectacular crashes and high-speed action, and Paradise is no exception. We spent countless hours cruising through Paradise City and, as always, looked for the most insane jumps possible, all the while picking up races to unlock new cars.

The remastered version enhances the visual appeal and performance, making the chaotic races and points-rewarding stunts a unique experience. The controls and physics are straightforward enough for nearly any player, and the blend of exploration, racing, and destruction provides a unique racing adventure that's difficult to find in any other racing game.

LEGO 2K Drive

When you think of a "2K" game, your mind probably goes to basketball or hockey. But the minds behind the 2K brand have stretched their legs and released Lego 2K Drive, a playful blend of Lego-themed charm and high-speed racing.

Lego 2K embraces an arcade-style approach to racing. The game incorporates real-world cars and tracks, all adorned in a delightful Lego aesthetic. The lighthearted humor and the whimsical design of the cars and tracks make the open-world environment and races an enjoyable escapade. There's also a fantastic story mode that coincides with your progress as a driver and helps you unlock new locations, tracks, cars, and characters.

While the playful design might feel more kid-oriented, the game is equally fun for anyone who enjoys an open-world racing game. We admittedly spent more time playing this than probably any other game on this list, purely because of how expansive the world is compared to other Switch-capable racing games.

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged is a nostalgic joyride that brings the iconic toy cars and tracks of your childhood to the digital realm. The game is an ode to the gravity-defying loops, twists, and turns synonymous with the vibrant-orange Hot Wheels tracks generations of gearheads have enjoyed.

The arcade-style racing is exhilarating, with a vast selection of Hot Wheels cars that add to the nostalgic charm. Deep Silver, the developers, have also included a comprehensive track editor, which we found ourselves playing with for hours in an effort to create the most impressive bedroom-based race track possible. While the crontrols for the track creation mode can be a bit convoluted, once you get the hang of it, it's a fantastic way to relive the childhood days spent piecing together orange and blue tracks around bedrooms and basements. The game successfully captures the essence of childhood racing adventures, making it a unique and engaging racing experience on the Nintendo Switch.
