Popular wine bar chain uncorks new Little Italy, Del Mar outposts

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A popular wine and boards bar chain has officially reached San Diego County with the opening of two new outposts.

Postino WineCafé arrived in America’s Finest City at the end of last month with the grand opening of restaurants in Little Italy’s Kettner Building and One Paseo, located near Del Mar. The new locations join others in California, Georgia, Arizona, Texas and Colorado.

“We have been looking forward to opening our doors in San Diego for a long time,” said Lauren Bailey, Postino co-founder and CEO. “We’ve always felt a special connection with the community and feel so fortunate to have found such beautiful spaces in both Little Italy and Del Mar.”

The Phoenix-based chain is known for its creative, seasonal boards and an ever-changing selection of delicious wines to choose from, which San Diegans can sip on inside the vintage-inspired restaurant space or while sitting on an outdoor patio — a hallmark of both new locations.

Curated by master sommelier Brent Karlicek, the wine list features over 30 varietals by the glass, on top of bottles exclusively available at Postino locations.

And for those who don’t drink wine, there is also a selection of tap beer from local craft brewers. The San Diego locations each have drafts from Stone Brewing, Modern Times, Bottle Logic, Pizza Port and Coronado Brewing among others.

As for the food menu, the chain’s bruschetta and charcuterie boards are Postino’s signature offering, but they also have from-scratch soups, fresh salads, panini sandwiches and “Snacky Things” for people to munch on.

Wine enthusiasts who visit the new Postino locations should expect to be greeted with a funky, yet sophisticated space featuring nods to the community, according to the chain.

The 3,387 square-foot Little Italy location draws inspiration from the Kettner Building’s history as a British Motors car dealership. Before it became home to restaurants, it served as San Diego’s oldest and largest imported car dealership.

The One Paseo bar, on the other hand, is adorned with décor that marries two parts of the area’s history: the Del Mar Surf Club in the 1930s Hollywood Regency period and the Del Mar Skate Ranch, which served as Tony Hawk’s stomping grounds when he was young.

Both Postino Little Italy and Del Mar are open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays; 10 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Happy hour is available daily until 5 p.m., with by-the-glass wines and pitches of beer each available for $6. Every Monday and Tuesday, guests can also enjoy Postino’s “Board & Bottle” deal — bottle of wine and bruschetta board for $25 — until 8 p.m.

On top of that, throughout the month of May, Postino Del Mar and Little Italy will be fundraising for A Reason to Survive, a San Diego-based non-profit that focuses on uplifting youth in South County through arts-based programs.

Postino’s Little Italy location is located at 2100 Kettner Blvd. The Del Mar location is located at 3745 Paseo Place.
