Popular Mountain Bike YouTuber Explains Why Creators Are Leaving The Platform

By now, most people know that the entertainment they consume across platforms is influenced by an algorithm. This can have a huge effect on creators whose livelihoods depend on playing to these algorithms.

Watch Mountain Bike YouTuber Seth Alvo of Berm Peak explain how the algorithm dictates content and has even caused some channels to call it quits.

Essentially, YouTube’s new algorithm incentivizes creators to make longer videos such as podcasts and interviews. As someone who has made a name for himself by making shorter videos, Seth stands to be hurt by this change.

In fact, some of his colleagues have quit YouTube altogether due to this change. Seth has a novel solution.

In this video, Alvo revealed he would use a soft paywall on the platform Substack. He will release his videos on the platform two weeks before posting his content to YouTube. The revenue generated from the subscription will allow him to insulate himself from being forced to change his formula to respond to the algorithm.

Instead of leaving his channel’s livelihood up to the whims of whether a machine thinks viewers want his high-production content, Seth can hedge.

Though some fans will complain about the paywall, Seth’s motivation is noble. As a believer in making high-quality content rather than high production value, he wants to make sure he is not letting an algorithm dictate the content he produces. Watch below his in-depth video about his troubles with recommended content.

As someone who has made it to where he is by making high-quality content, Seth will be well served by sticking with his bread and butter.
