A popular bakery and two restaurants close in Westchester
Though it seems to be a record year for food openings in Westchester, closings continue to be part of the 2023 dining scene. That includes the recent demise of a long-time Ossining staple, an Asian fusion Irvington restaurant and an eight-year-old French eatery in Port Chester. Details follow.
Ossining Bakery, Ossining
Ossining Bakery, famous for its rolls, breads, doughnuts and other goodies, has closed.
The owners could not be reached for comment but Amanda Cubero, a real estate salesperson with eXp Realty, said the 50 N. Highland space went on the market June 30.
The bakery, which many considered a long-standing local tradition, was popular for its holiday items such as Bolo Rei (aka King Cake), Easter bread and Pasteis de Nata (Portuguese egg tarts). It was also known for its regular guy/nothing fancy vibes, featuring an interior that looked exactly the same as it was back in the day (think more than 30 years ago).

GoSu, Irvington
This Asian fusion restaurant, known for its variety of meat, noodles, rice, and vegetable dishes, served its last meal Aug. 19. The restaurant, at 50 South Buckhout Street, had been in business since 2017. The announcement was made on their Instagram page, thanking customers for their years of service. A variety of restaurant equipment is for sale until Aug. 29th (info on their Instagram page).
Appetit Bistro, Port Chester
After eight years, Appetit Bistro, specializing in modern French cuisine, closed. The last day was June 18. Owner Edwin Montoya said it was too hard to recover after the pandemic as they lost about 35% of their revenue. "Inflation and higher labor costs made it very difficult for us to run a profitable operation," he said. Plus food costs went "through the roof" on a lot of their inventory.
"We were shouldering this cost for a while in the hopes that eventually things would go back to normal but that was not the case," he added. "We can only raise our prices so much."
On the plus side, he also owns Los Remolinos, a spirited Latin-inspired restaurant in Norwalk, featuring elevated fare, craft cocktails, dancing and music. He hopes to bring a second location to Port Chester in early September. Stay tuned to lohud for up-to-date details for his new eatery called El Callejon.
