Popeyes about to rise in this South Jersey town

BURLINGTON TWP. – A Popeyes restaurant will soon be rising here.

A developer recently demolished two houses to make way for the 2,500 square-foot restaurant at 1800 Burlington Mount Holly Road.

A 24-seat eatery with drive-thru service - one of at least three Popeyes coming to local towns - will rise in a commercial area that permits a quick-serve restaurant.

The restaurant’s proposed build met with criticism from some residents who live near the development site at Route 541 and Kelly Drive. Some of the concerns cited by the neighbors were possible traffic problems, and potential problems from food waste, cooking odors and noise.

The location is at the intersection across the highway from a recently opened Chipotle and near where a Lidl supermarket recently closed. It also has proximity to the long-closed Mattson’s Market site as well.

Another Popeyes is less than five miles away on Route 541 in Westampton at 1851 Burlington-Mount Holly Road. A Popeyes is also being built on Route 130 South in Cinnaminson, next to a construction site for a future Tim Hortons.

The chain also has at least two restaurants in the works in Camden County.

In Lindenwold, the Joint Land Use Board has approved a proposed restaurant at 701 South White Horse Pike.

A similar board in Runnemede has advanced plans for a Popeyes on the 800 block of North Black Horse Pike.

Popeyes was established in New Orleans in 1972 and is known for its Southern-style fried chicken, biscuits and spicy Cajun fries.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, which has more than 2,700 locations (more than 3,100 worldwide), is part of Toronto-based Restaurant Brands International. The Canadian firm also oversees the Burger King, Tim Hortons and Firehouse Subs brands.
