Popeyes Is Launching Its First-Ever Chicken Sandwich

Did you know that Popeyes doesn’t have chicken sandwiches? I didn’t either—until this morning, when the chain announced that it’ll be adding one to its menu.

The sandwich, which is apparently Popeyes’ biggest launch in 30 years, includes a buttermilk battered and hand-breaded white meat chicken filet, served on a buttery, toasted brioche bun with two barrel cured pickles, and your choice of classic mayo or spicy Cajun spread.

Because nothing can ever be easy, you won’t be able to get the new item at actual Popeyes restaurants for at least a few days. To celebrate the launch, the chicken chain is partnering with Sweet Dixie Kitchen, the California restaurant that went viral when its owner was spotted walking into through the front door with Popeyes bags.

The incident, dubbed #PopeyesGate, left fans furious that the restaurant was attempting to pass off the chicken as its own.

All that free advertising must’ve left Popeyes with a soft spot for Sweet Dixie Kitchen, though, because the new sandwich is only being served at the California restaurant until the nationwide launch next week.

"To be honest, I thought they were calling to sue me," Kim Sánchez, owner of Sweet Dixie Kitchen, said in a press release. "We have a long history with Popeyes, but we've always said Popeyes chicken is the best fried chicken we ever had. So, we are thrilled to collaborate with them to launch and serve their delicious Popeyes Chicken Sandwich."

If you happen to be in the Long Beach, California area, you can get your hands on the new menu item before the rest of the country: It’s available today and tomorrow (August 8-9) at Sweet Dixie Kitchen—401 East 3rd Street.

As for the rest of us, the sandwich will be officially launched nationwide on August 12.
