  • Pope Francis was caught on camera repeatedly slapping the hand of a woman trying to speak with him.

  • The pope has apologized for his behavior.

Hello and welcome to 2020, year that is already doing the very most. Yesterday, Pope Francis was greeting pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square when he was caught on camera slapping the hand of a woman who was attempting to talk with him. In a video shared by CNN, the pope can be seen greeting the crowd when a woman grabs his hand and tries to speak with him. He almost immediately becomes visibly upset when she won’t let go and begins slapping her hand and shouting.

There’s obviously been a huge amount of backlash over what appears to be verrry un-pope-like behavior, and Pope Francis has since apologized. According to The Guardian, he spoke about the incident during his Angelus address to St. Peter’s Square on New Year’s Day, saying, “I apologize for the bad example yesterday...sometimes even I lose patience.”

The internet is already drawing comparisons to an earlier incident last year when the pope was seen repeatedly yanking his hand away from people in line to kiss his papal ring, gifting us the best meme ever in the process:
